Roman Wilson Impresses Teammates in First Week at OTAs
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

A fast start into offseason training activities does not mean a ton, but it can’t hurt for rookies. Pittsburgh Steelers third-round pick Roman Wilson is already earning high marks from fellow teammates after one week at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. Calvin Austin III and Joey Porter Jr are from both sides of the football field—heaped praise onto Wilson and the traits that he brings to the fold.

Austin, in particular, expects Wilson to take on a massive role in his first season. Really, without Diontae Johnson around the building, Wilson needs to play a significant role for the Steelers to have a successful passing offense in 2024. Austin also expects him to check all the points to reach that goal.

“That’s my dog. You can tell he’s just ready to learn,” Austin said . “He’s eager to learn, asking questions, wanting to know how he can make this route better. I’m telling you, though, some of the questions he was asking me, I was like,’ bro, I have the perfect answer for you.’ I think to when I was young, and it was guys like Anthony Miller and Gunner Olszewski, and they were telling me what to do against Cover 2 Man when I’m in the slot. Roman’s a baller man. He’s going to be a great player. He’ll be ready.” Being in the same room as Roman Wilson, I expected Austin’s response to be a glowing report. Porter is a bit different since he has a history with Wilson. Returning to their game at Penn State, Porter faced Wilson and Michigan, and Wilson caught two touchdowns. Porter gave some perspective on Wilson’s role in the Steelers’ offense and compared it to how he was used with the Wolverines. He referred to it as similar. “All the new receivers are coming in and working really well, but you know, Roman came in and made some splash plays,” Porter said. “It’s kinda similar in our offense to how he was used at Michigan. So, he’s making a lot of good plays. He’s doing a lot of over routes. I played against him at Michigan, so I covered those overs. He caught a lot of nice passes.” Wilson is taking the right strides to have a solid-sized niche in the offense by winning over the middle of the field on those over routes. Even if the team decides to add someone externally, Pittsburgh will have a unique player in Wilson, and he will be profiled as a weapon Arthur Smith can use in his rookie season.
