Ron Rivera could 'envision' Alex Smith competing for Washington QB job

As Alex Smith continues down his long and winding road to the NFL, he can take some solace in knowing he has the support of Ron Rivera. Washington's head coach said that if Smith is able to get healthy enough to play, he can "envision" him becoming a part of the team's quarterback competition.

"The big thing is if he can do the things we need him to do, that he needs to do to help himself on the field," Rivera said. "He'll be part of the conversation most definitely. ... We'll see how he is this week. It's a matter of: Can he do the movements he needs to do? Can he protect himself when on the field? He's going to have to hand the ball off, drop back in the pocket and throw the ball. He's going to have to escape. We have to make sure he can do those things and protect himself as he plays."

Smith is attempting to return to football after suffering a broken fibula and tibia in November 2018. Many assumed that his playing days were behind him, but he has blown many away with his recovery. However, he has yet to be medically cleared to play by Washington and was placed on the physically unable to perform list, where he will presumably start the season.

Fortunately for Smith, if he is able to get healthy, he should have a legitimate shot at becoming the starting quarterback for Washington. Dwayne Haskins underwhelmed during his time as a starter last season, winning just two of seven games while completing less than 60% of his passes. Kyle Allen similarly struggled while filling in for Cam Newton in Carolina last season.
