With Geno Smith the locked-in starting quarterback and Aidan O’Connell serving as a competent backup over the past couple of seasons, the Las Vegas Raiders have at least some stability at the position.
That makes it difficult for someone like Cam Miller to see any reasonable playing time in his rookie season. A sixth-round pick out of North Dakota State, it is difficult to see Miller in any capacity other than a developmental option at this stage of his career. With a relatively quiet offseason so far, it was appearing as though that was exactly the case.
However, the mock game that took place during Saturday’s practice may have changed those perceptions.
While he was commandeering the third-team offense against the third-team defense, the importance of Miller’s performance cannot be overstated.
During the period where Miller was in the game, he ran for two touchdowns and displayed the mobility he showcased during the pre-draft process. One read-option play was even posted by the Raiders on their social media page, giving fans a taste of what Miller can provide.

Miller is still the third quarterback on the depth chart, but any sign of progress from a young signal-caller has to be seen as a positive.
The advantage Miller has for the Raiders is that he is a cost-controlled backup option, which any NFL team would be lucky to have. If Miller continues to impress, he could move the depth chart and give the Raiders the freedom to flip O’Connell to a more quarterback-needy team. The preseason will be a clear indication of what the Raiders intend to do, as both O’Connell and Miller will likely see heavy usage.
Miller is still working to push up the depth chart, but Saturday’s showing may have helped him close the gap a little.
