Rookie Quarterback Draws Outpouring of Support After Raiders Release

The Las Vegas Raiders acquired quarterback Geno Smith in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks and gave him a two-year extension worth $75 million. The Raiders also had second-year QB Aidan O'Connell all set to take the backup role before suffering a fractured wrist in the final preseason game.

That led to the Raiders having just two quarterbacks: Smith and rookie Cam Miller.

Miller played five seasons at North Dakota State and threw for a total of 9,720 yards with 81 touchdowns while winning two FCS titles and being named the 2024 FCS MVP.

However, the Raiders acquired Kenny Pickett in a trade with the Cleveland Browns, and that ultimately meant the end of Miller's time in Las Vegas.

On Tuesday, the Raiders announced their 53-man roster, and Miller was one of the cuts.

Fans Show Support for Cam Miller

After the Raiders revealed their cuts, fans were not thrilled with Miller being let go.

"Why the hell do you wave Cam Miller???" one fan asked. "WHAT," another said.

"Waste of 2 6th round picks drafting Cam and Mellot," another replied. "Cam Miller and Tommy?" another wrote. "Cam Miller? Seriously? Not even getting a chance? Crazy," another stated.

"Praying they make it through waivers," another wrote. "Those will prove to be 2 MAJOR mistakes," replied another.

Miller played sparingly in the preseason, throwing for just 25 yards with one interception, although fans are certainly surprised he was released with just two active quarterbacks on the roster.

Tom Brady Endorsed Cam Miller

Miller was selected in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and it turns out that Raiders minority owner Tom Brady was happy about Miller's selection, as confirmed by Raiders GM John Spytek to Dan Pompei of The Athletic back in May.

"He liked the way he threw it, his technique, throwing from the ground up and his motion," Spytek said. "And he thought he had the potential to improve."

Miller also received a Brock Purdy comparison from CBS Sports, so there was a lot to like about the FCS star coming into the draft.

Now, Miller will try and catch on with another team, or perhaps the Raiders will sign him if he clears waivers.
