The Las Vegas Raiders are quickly ramping up their preparations for training camp, with minicamp underway.
Despite being out in the sweltering Southern Nevada heat, the Raiders have continued to keep the energy high. Minicamp offers just a small taste of what training camp is going to be like to prepare the team for what is to come. It gives some of the newer players on the Raiders a chance to ingratiate themselves with their teammates, as well as the rookies to make a strong first impression on the field.
One rookie, in particular, has risen to the challenge.
So far, one of the rookies who has received the most praise from the Raiders so far is wide receiver Dont’e Thornton Jr., the enticing size-speed Tennessee product who the team picked up in the fourth round.
However, Thornton has already made the push for more playing time, and his minicamp performance so far has justified that.
“Dont’e Thornton Jr. has seen a lot of reps at outside receiver opposite of Tre Tucker and Jakobi Meyers. He was a constant target for Geno Smith throughout practice, reeling in a highly contested catch in the end zone during red zone period,” wrote Raiders team reporter Levi Edwards.
Perfect placement for Geno Smith, finding Dont’e Thornton for a touchdown with two defensive backs draped over him.
This offseason, Thornton has been one of, if not the most impressive rookie for the #Raiders

Considering that the Raiders drafted running back Ashton Jeanty sixth overall, the fact that Thornton is being thrown in the mix for the best rookie performance so far during the offseason is an impressive feat. His teammates are also raving about what Thornton can bring to the table.
“He’s nice,” cornerback Jakorian Bennett said. “6-foot-5, 4.3 [40-yard dash] fast, so he’s got it. But he’s going to continue to sharpen it up and he’s going to help us a lot.”
A continued strong effort from Thornton could push him towards significant snaps during his rookie year.
