With their ties to the country, the Pittsburgh Steelers are hoping to be the first NFL team to host a game in Ireland. Steelers president Art Rooney II gave an update on the process in an exclusive interview with Rob King, which was posted on Steelers.com on Monday.
“You know, I think we’re still optimistic that it’s going to happen,” Rooney said. “Hopefully going to have an announcement soon, but it’s not official until it’s official. We’re just going to wait until all those pieces fall into place, but we’d love to be the first team to host a game in Ireland — a regular season game.”
The Steelers are one of three NFL teams with Ireland as their designated global market, along with the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets. Pittsburgh has expressed that playing a game in Ireland is one of its long-term goals. Late Steelers owner Dan Rooney served as Ireland’s ambassador from 2009-12.

NFL.com’s Jeremy Bergman wrote in November that league commissioner Roger Goodell was eyeing eight international games for the 2025 season.
“We are definitely going to Spain, we announced that,” Goodell said before a matchup between the New York Giants and the Carolina Panthers in Munich, Germany. “We expect to return to Mexico City. We expect to return to Brazil. We will certainly be back in the U.K. And we’re possibly also looking at the potential of another game in the U.K. area in Ireland, possibly. That’s a possibility. And we’ll certainly be back here in Germany. So if that total’s eight, that’s what we’re shooting for.”
Dublin’s Aviva Stadium has been the site for a handful of college football games and could be a site the league looks at. Croke Park was the venue of a preseason game between the Steelers and Chicago Bears in 1997.

I love the people here. When the opportunity presented itself, it was really a no-brainer. It was nice just being able to go through the whole offseason program. The OTAs and the lifting, all the meetings and practices, I think has just helped me a ton.” FitzPatrick entered the pros in 2022, when the Falcons took him off the board in the sixth round (213th overall) of the NFL draft.

And right now, I think, you know, he feels pretty confident that he’s going to play in the NBA next season,” Dazzell explained. “He currently still views the Celtics as a top destination, and really, really wants to end up in Boston. And that’s not me saying that that’s going to happen, but that’s a top priority for him. He loves the culture. He loves the fact that they’ve been in the playoffs routinely. It’s a culture of winning, the coaches,” she added. Boston has roster spot available for potential signing The Celtics maintain one open roster spot that could accommodate Bassey’s addition. His summer league performance with Boston demonstrated his potential value to the organization. “He really wants to come to the Celtics. We’ll see whether it works out right now. Boston has one remaining roster spot that’s open,” Dazzell noted. Bassey’s summer league production included impressive numbers of 15.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game. These statistics explain why other teams like Partizan Belgrade have shown interest in acquiring his services, as well as the fact that he is athletic rim‑runner with elite length and shot‑blocking instincts. His strong summer showing could translate to meaningful NBA contributions if he maintains his health and development trajectory. Injury history creates concern about reliability Bassey has struggled with health issues throughout his NBA career, frequently dealing with injuries that have limited his availability. His most significant setback came with an ACL injury in 2023 that restricted him to only 19 games that season. Last season with the Spurs, he appeared in 36 games while averaging modest numbers of 4.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks per game.
