Rumor: Seattle Seahawks Would Bring Back Jamal Adams On 1 Condition
Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Seahawks thought they were getting their long-term solution for safety when they traded for Jamal Adams in 2020. Instead, injuries caused Adams to never regain his All-Pro form and the deal was largely considered a failure. Adams is now a free agent, and many believed his days in Seattle would be over. However, that may not be the case. The rumor is the Seahawks will bring him back on one condition.

Seattle Seahawks Considering Bringing Back Jamal Adams?

According to ESPN’s Brady Henderson, sources from the Seattle Seahawks have said Jamal Adams could come back, but it would take a position change.

“Seahawks sources have emphasized that if the team brings Adams back, it will be to play weakside linebacker in a part-time role. Given their tight financial situation and the fact that Adams is coming off three straight injury-plagued seasons and has zero sacks since 2020, it would likely be for something close to the league minimum.”

Adams would need to learn the weakside linebacker position if he would return to Seattle. The former New York Jets safety is known for his ability to play close to the line of scrimmage. In 2020, he set the NFL single-season record for sacks by a defensive back (9.5 sacks). Being at the linebacker position would give him more opportunities to wreak havoc in the backfield.

Is Either Side Actually Considering This?

This would certainly be a big story if it happened. On the one hand, it seems likely that some team would take a flyer on Jamal Adams, hoping he could stay healthy and provide a veteran presence. On the other hand, there are still many quality safeties available in the free agent market. Former Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons is still available, and there are a slew of other quality players. This makes it more likely the Seattle Seahawks could convince Adams to come back on a small deal. A position change is better than no team at all.

The Seattle Seahawks defense should improve under new head coach Mike MacDonald. While he is taking over the head coaching duties, he is one of the best defensive play callers in the game. If Seattle can shut down opposing offenses, they have the weapons on the other side of the ball to score points. This team could give the top tier in the NFC some issues in 2024, and if they sneak into the playoffs, it will be a tough out.
