The 2021 San Francisco 49ers made it all the way to the NFC Championship Game without the services of veteran running back Raheem Mostert, who went down with a season-ending knee injury during the Week 1 41-33 victory over the Detroit Lions.
Mostert is out of contract when the new league year opens next month and was seemingly replaced by the likes of Elijah Mitchell and Deebo Samuel last fall, but Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports the 49ers have "been in touch" about re-signing Mostert, per agent Brett Tessler.
Mostert, who turns 30 in April, was limited to just eight games during the 2020 campaign because of knee and ankle issues, so durability has to be a concern for any would-be buyer considering his history and age. However, the two sides could come to terms on an agreement if Mostert was willing to put pen to paper on a one-year "prove it" contract this spring to continue playing under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
It was back in the 2019 NFC Championship (held in January 2020) when Mostert torched the Green Bay Packers to the tune of 220 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries. While San Francisco fans understandably remember that performance fondly, it happened a lifetime ago as it pertains to the career of who has become an often-injured ball-carrier.
