Something has gone very wrong with the Pittsburgh Steelers offense.
The first time they played the Cincinnati Bengals this season, they accumulated over 500 yards of offense and 400+ passing yards from QB Russell Wilson.
But on Saturday, the team struggled to move the ball much less score, barely breaking the 200-yard mark and scoring only 17 points while dropping their fourth in a row.
But for Russ, he's done talking about the past and is only looking forward:
"I really...I don't really have a... I think what I want to say is...I don't really want to talk about the past just because I think, we've been in that," said Wilson after the Bengals game. "We've been in that for a little bit here. I think the best thing we can do is get ready for the playoffs. It's a new season. That's the only thing that really matters anymore at this point, right? The reality is, obviously us winning that game would have helped us in some form or fashion, but, at the end of the day, we got into the playoffs, everybody's got to beat everybody anyway, and that's got to be our focus right now."
The idea of having a clean slate and heading into the playoffs as 0-0 is good one in theory. But this isn't the preseason to the regular season. The momentum you bring into the playoffs often determines how you perform in the postseason. Going in as a loser of four straight for the first time in the past 25 years is not a recipe for success and Mike Tomlin knows as much:
"I don't know that you go clean slate, you know, you better learn from these lessons," said Tomlin when asked about starting over now that the playoffs are here. "You know what I mean? We're, a really tough group. It's okay to learn from these lessons and to remember the things that created this, because there's nothing mystical about it. And so that's gonna be my mentality, and that's what I'm gonna relay to the guys as we as we move into next week."
You would never know the Steelers are even heading to the playoffs when judging the body language and actions of players like George Pickens, and the words of Russell Wilson, who many believe would be better off on the bench in next week's playoff game.
Questions of what's next if the Steelers lose could be prevalent as soon as this time next week.
