Quarterback Russell Wilson is now in his 14th season in the NFL. He was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
He spent the first 10 seasons of his career in Seattle before being traded to the Denver Broncos. He then spent the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers and signed with the New York Giants in the offseason.
Recently, Wilson was benched with rookie QB Jaxson Dart taking over the Giants' QB1 job.
While his future remains unclear in the league, Wilson has a Super Bowl ring and has thrown for an impressive 46,921 passing yards and has 5,556 rushing yards in his career.
In September, the National Black Players Coalition named Wilson as the "Quarterback of the Century," per the Richmond Free Press.
Wilson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, but raised in Richmond, Virginia, and he has made a lot of efforts off the field as well.
On Monday, the Giants QB shared a personal message on his Instagram page in relation to the award.
Richmond Mayor Danny Avula wrote a letter to Wilson, and the Giants QB responded with "I'm Grateful! Grateful! Richmond, VA. Hometown!"
Here is the letter from the Richmond Mayor:
"Dear Mr. Russell Wilson, On behalf of the City of Richmond, I extend my warmest congratulations on your recognition as the National Black Players Coalition Quarterback of the Century! This remarkable honor celebrates not only your achievements on the field but also the integrity, leadership and perseverance you have demonstrated throughout your career.
"Richmond deeply admires the extensive charitable work you have undertaken across the nation. Your humanitarian efforts continue to uplift countless communities through your dedication to youth empowerment, education and social impact. On the field, your career stands among the greats, marked by once-in-a-lifetime achievements earned through discipline and honor. Your commitment to excellence has inspired many young athletes, especially within our communities. From your time at Collegiate School to becoming an award-winning quarterback, your journey has been a source of pride for Richmond and reflects the values our city upholds.
"We proudly celebrate your achievements as a valued member of our community. As Mayor, it would be my honor to welcome you back to Richmond for a special visit and celebration in recognition of this milestone. Your return would be deeply meaningful to our residents and would inspire the next generation of athletes," Avula concluded.
Wilson also played the "Grateful" song by Dante Bowe and Fridayy while posting the screenshot of the letter.
The veteran signal-caller has been active off the field, including donating to Feeding America and the Boys & Girls Clubs.
He has been honored with the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award and the Bart Starr Award, both of which are given to players who contribute off the field as well and help with community service.
Wilson also founded the "Why Not You Foundation," which is a nonprofit dedicated to helping fight poverty with the mission to "empower change in the world, one individual at a time, and one child at a time."
The former Seahawks QB also visited the Seattle Children's Hospital regularly during his time in Seattle, and he and his wife Ciara donated $1 million to Feeding America years ago, so his charitable efforts are highly regarded.
