Russell Wilson Urged to Quit Giants Amid AFC Development

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson has spent most of his career in the NFC. His first 10 years in the league were with the Seattle Seahawks. He’s now back in the conference after signing with the Giants as a free agent during the offseason.

In 2022, the Seahawks traded Wilson to the Denver Broncos, which prompted his move to the AFC. After two years in Denver, the Super-Bowl-winning QB signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he spent the 2024 campaign.

On Monday, Steelers icon Ryan Clark talked up Wilson’s potential return to the AFC amid an unfortunate turn of events involving the Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts received some terrible news on Monday after it was confirmed that star quarterback Daniel Jones had suffered a season-ending Achilles injury. The 28-year-old tore his right Achilles in Sunday’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, which put an end to Jones’ strong first season in Indianapolis.

Rookie quarterback Riley Leonard was supposed to be the next man up, but the fact that he’s dealing with a Grade 1 PCL sprain led the Colts to bring back 44-year-old Philip Rivers, who last saw NFL action nearly five years ago.

If it were up to Clark, however, Wilson would have been an excellent choice for Indianapolis. In fact, the former NFL star-turned-ESPN analyst has urged Wilson to quit the Giants in search of a better situation elsewhere.

"If I'm somebody like Russell Wilson, I'm going to run upstairs and say, hey, man, fire me, right?" Clark said on Monday. "Waive me right now. And maybe I can go play for this Indianapolis team, who has some pieces around that I can help win and get to the playoffs.

"Because right now, this team went all in. Sauce Gardner hurt, and now Daniel Jones. He was the reason you felt like you didn't need to have a quarterback in the first round next year."

Wilson started the first three games of the season for the Giants. However, after losing all three contests, Wilson was benched in favor of rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. When Dart went down with an injury mid-season, the Giants turned to Jameis Winston, effectively making Wilson their third-string QB.

According to Clark, Wilson should have asked New York to waive his contract so he could try to secure the job in Indianapolis. However, it appears that that ship has sailed, with the Colts opting to bring Rivers out of retirement.

Wilson’s contract with the Giants is for one year. The 37-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
