Russell Wilson's reputation-saving clash with the Titans

Russell Wilson can save his reputation in a clash with the Titans.

Wilson is the subject of ridicule thanks to the Broncos (3-5) tumbling into the AFC's pit. His play hasn't helped. Through eight games, he's posted a 36.0 QBR, 28th in the league, well below its average.

The inefficiency is vexing. When a nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback joins a talented, young team, they should soar. There has to be an explanation, and there is. The Broncos have struggled because they're facing some of the better passing defenses in the NFL.

In four of Wilson's seven starts, the Broncos faced units that allowed fewer yards than the league average. Wilson averaged a 70.9 passer rating. In his three starts where he faced defenses that allowed more than the league average, he posted a rating of 101.3, a striking difference.

Sunday's matchup against the Titans is a tipping point for Wilson. Tennessee has one of the worst passing defenses in the league, ranking 30th.

If Wilson has a spectacular day, it can prove he's not washed and set the foundation for an improbable late-season charge despite minuscule odds.

Five of their next seven opponents have atrocious passing defenses, ranking well below the league's midpoint. Perhaps it's a consummate opportunity to start a staggering win streak.
