Russell Wilson's Role With Giants Clear at OTAs

The New York Giants know it’s only a matter of time before the calls to start first-round quarterback Jaxson Dart become impossible to ignore. For now, though, this is Russell Wilson’s team.

Giants fans got an early taste of the action on Wednesday when organized team activities (OTAs) continued and team drills began to flood social media. New York has a plan for its passers, giving Wilson, Jameis Winston, Dart, and Tommy DeVito time with the starters.

Wilson’s role with the Giants is abundantly clear at OTAs, despite others getting reps and the pressure that Dart could potentially place on him. He’s the starter, and that’s not changing anytime soon.

“Russell Wilson is the New York Giants' clear-cut starting quarterback at organized team activities,” Jordan Raanan wrote. “That was apparent by the distribution of reps at Wednesday's practice, the first such workout open to the media this year. Wilson took most of the first-team snaps, with rookie Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston also sneaking in a few. Tommy DeVito fit in for four third-team reps throughout the practice.”

It’s worth noting that clips, stats, and general updates will come down the chute. Dart may have better flashes or production. Barring something truly drastic, none of it should change New York’s plan under center.

Dart entered the league as an intangibly raw passer with a significant transition ahead of him, given the differences between Lane Kiffin’s Mississippi offense and head coach Brian Daboll’s scheme. This is a redshirt year for Dart, and the expectation should be that he sits for much, if not all, of the season.

“He's a pro,” Daboll told reporters on Wednesday. “There's a reason why he has had the career that he's had. When you look at his work ethic, his commitment to being the best version of himself that he can be, how he's out here at practice, his leadership traits within the players, his communication, not just with the receivers, tight ends, running backs, but with the offensive line. He's been a good addition for us.”

Between Wilson and Winston, Dart has over two decades of experience to learn from. Expect New York to take things slow with his development, regardless of how he looks during OTAs.
