Russini: Dolphins Open GM Role Viewed as “Exceptional”
Russini said: “But speaking of the Dolphins, their general manager opening is getting lots of attention around the league, as it’s viewed as an exceptional front office opportunity by seasoned GMs. More on that in the weeks to come.”
Exceptional?
How?
Why?
The new GM may have a head coach forced on him, has a quarterback who is underperforming, has a contract that is almost impossible to move, the team’s best player (De’Von Achane) needs a new contract, and if he isn’t given one he will hold out come August, and a roster overall has very few building block foundational pieces to build around.
Sorry if my BS meter is going off here. To me, this report seems to be a plant by someone with the Miami Dolphins to make the opening sound like a great opportunity, but the next general manager is walking into a disaster.
You have to wonder if the Dolphins have been quietly sending out feelers to top assistant general managers around the league to gauge their interest in the position, and they are receiving a lot of rejections and nos.
So, what better way to drum up interest than to float a story like this to Russini and get the word out that this job is fantastic and everyone should want it?
I will say, though, that the flip side is that, in some ways, depending on your career goals, this job isn’t all that bad.
We have seen Stephen Ross stick with Jeff Ireland and Chris Grier for far longer than they should have in this role, and whoever is hired next will likely receive many years of job security before Ross finally decides to move on, regardless of how many mistakes they make.
So, if someone is looking for job stability, not necessarily the best possible place to win, then the Miami Dolphins general manager position would be considered “exceptional” in that way.
It’s tough to believe the truth behind this report by Russini, other than someone feeding her information to drum up interest for this position.
So, while this report from Russini is something all Dolphins fans wish to be true, it is probably just a PR game with someone who has an agenda and wants to use her to get a message out to the world.
Also, if this is being leaked out there, one has to assume Champ Kelly the interim GM isn’t in serious consideration to keep the job and the Dolphins are in the market for the best of the best around the league who is available this offseason.
