Ryan Fitzpatrick can relate to Daniel Jones' current quest to find a new NFL team.
Fitzpatrick played for nine different NFL organizations across his NFL career and never lasted more than Jones' six years with the New York Giants. Now a free agent after clearing waivers on Monday, Jones may hope to avoid the same journeyman plight.
Several teams are reportedly interested in signing Jones, but Fitzpatrick suggested a different approach. On his "Fitz & Whit" podcast with fellow Prime Video analyst Andrew Whitworth, the 42-year-old encouraged Jones to sit out the 2024 season's final six weeks.
"I'm really happy that New York released him because I think it puts him out of his misery a little bit. They didn’t have to do that," Fitzpatrick said, via Awful Announcing. "And my advice to him: I wouldn’t sign anywhere. I would just take the rest of the year."
Fitzpatrick doesn't see the benefit of Jones joining a new team unless a playoff contender loses its starting quarterback down the stretch.
"I don't think there's a reason to sign as a backup somewhere," he continued. "I don't think there’s a reason to sign on a bad team and go play more games."
Jones is reportedly seeking a playoff contender and ruled out the 2-9 Las Vegas Raiders. It'd likely take a starter going down for him to play anywhere else.
As a result, Fitzpatrick thinks Jones should instead regroup and prepare for an attempted rebound in 2025. While Jones has gotten linked to the Minnesota Vikings, the Harvard alum believes Jones can enjoy the same fruitful second act as Minnesota's current starter.
"This is one of those moments where he truly gets to hit reset in his career, relax a little bit, take the offseason, find a good landing spot," Fitzpatrick said. "And he’s the type of guy that can land on his feet. He could have that Sam Darnold-type resurgence with the right scheme, with the right place, with the right coaches, but he’s got to play a lot better than he has.”
