Saints add RB Jamaal Williams as team tries to make another playoff run

The New Orleans Saints are serious about getting back into title contention, and the organization added to an already-active offseason by agreeing to a contract with running back Jamaal Williams.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Williams is joining the Saints on a three-year, $12 million deal with $8 million guaranteed. The former Lions running back led the league with 17 rushing touchdowns a season ago.

Williams finished the season with 262 carries for 1,066 yards and became expendable in Detroit after the team signed running back David Montgomery to a three-year, $18 million contract.

The Saints needed to address their lack of running back depth with 2022 running backs Mark Ingram and David Johnson becoming unrestricted free agents. Alvin Kamara was charged with battery stemming from an altercation at the Pro Bowl in Las Vegas in February 2022 and has a trial date set for July 31. Depending on the outcome of the trial, Kamara could face a suspension from the NFL.

New Orleans is coming off of its first double-digit loss season since 2005 and has made some big moves already this offseason in an attempt at curbing its downward spiral, with the latest being praised by several NFL media members.

On March 11, QB Derek Carr officially signed a four-year, $150 million contract to become the team's new starting quarterback.

The team replaced departing defensive tackles David Onyemata and Shy Tuttle with cheaper options Nathan Shepherd and Khalen Saunders before word broke of the Williams signing.

The Saints' additions are impressive considering the team was backed against a wall in terms of cap room heading into the start of the league year.

Per Over The Cap, prior to Wednesday's signings being added, New Orleans has $338,247 in salary-cap space. General manager Mickey Loomis has perfected the art of manipulating the cap by using void years and contract restructures to the team's advantage, but it's perhaps never been done as artfully as this offseason.

The goal in New Orleans is still a championship regardless of what anyone on the outside believes the team's 2023 ceiling to be, and the front office is doing all it can to ensure that belief is warranted.

No one should pencil in Carr for a return to Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII just yet, but the Saints have made it clear they won't leave any stone unturned in trying to get there.
