Saints' biggest offensive roster move of their offseason has already blown up in their face

Making mistakes is a part of football. Unfortunately, trends can start when players continually make blunders over and over. For the New Orleans Saints, tight end Juwan Johnson has had issues with ball security over the course of his career at times, and that beast reared its ugly head again for Johnson in Week 6 against the New England Patriots.

Juwan Johnson makes major mistake against Patriots

The tight end, who received a three-year, $30.75 million contract extension this offseason, has not been a pillar of consistency so far. Instead, Johnson made a huge gaff when he fumbled near midfield for the Saints late in the game against New England. His production, as a whole, this season has been disappointing to fans.

With the offense trying to start a key drive and attempting to take a late lead, Johnson's fumble gave the ball back to the Patriots with a chance to bleed more time off the clock. Fumbles after the catch have been a bit of an issue for Johnson over the years, and while it was a good play by the Patriots defenders, Johnson is paid to make those plays and take care of the football.

New Orleans felt confident in him during the offseason and paid a hefty amount on a multi-year commitment to bring him back, but they may regret that in the long run.

The tight end caught just two passes for fifteen yards against the Patriots. He has not totaled more than three catches in a game since Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks. Johnson will look to bounce back next week against the Chicago Bears.

Saints' pass catcher group may lose talent at trade deadline as well

New Orleans may look to deal some of their offensive talent at the trade deadline, too. Trading away Alvin Kamara seems more unlikely after Ian Rapoport's report of his desire to stay with the Saints, but there are multiple other options that the Saints could look to move in exchange for draft capital.

"Sources say Kamara told Saints general manager Mickey Loomis that he'd like to remain with the franchise through the rest of his career, which was the goal when he signed a two-year, $24.5 million extension last October. Kamara is signed through 2026 and will have a decision to make prior to next season about if he wants to continue playing." -- Ian Rapoport

At wide receiver, teams have checked on both Rashid Shaheed and Chris Olave already this season. New Orleans hasn't decided to trade either of them, but with losses mounting and neither having a long-term deal with the organization set right now, the pressure to do so may increase closer to the deadline.

Brandin Cooks is another veteran option that a team could try to swing a deal for with New Orleans. Cooks' production has been limited this season, but he is well respected as a leader in the locker room and his abilities as a run blocker. With another team, his receiving ability may get more looks, too.

Regardless, the room of pass catchers that Spencer Rattler may throw to over the latter half of the season could lack even more talent or upside than it currently does. That may concern some when it comes to the young QB's development, understandably so. Only time will tell which route Kellen Moore's team chooses to take.
