Saints get miraculous Derek Carr update ahead of Sunday's game

After sustaining an injury that appeared likely to sideline him for weeks, Saints quarterback Derek Carr will start in a huge NFC South game against Tampa Bay in Week 4.

Carr (sprained shoulder) was injured on a third-quarter sack by Packers edge rusher Rashan Gary last week. New Orleans led 17-0 at the time of his injury but Green Bay scored 18 unanswered points to emerge with an 18-17 win.

Afterward, Carr was taken to a hospital for X-rays to determine if he had any internal injuries.

His health is a massive boost for New Orleans, as is the return of Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara.

He returns from a three-game suspension, which should be a significant boost for Carr as he tries to avoid unnecessary hits.

Per data from Pro Football Focus, 69 of his 71 targets last season came within nine yards of the line of scrimmage.

While the Saints' offensive line has struggled at times this season, it could catch a break against a depleted Bucs defense. Per the team's Week 4 injury report, four defenders are out for Sunday's game, including rookie first-round defensive tackle Calijah Kancey (calf) and defensive back Jamel Dean (neck/shoulder).

Defensive tackle Vita Vea (pectoral) was limited in practice on Friday and is questionable, as is linebacker Devin White (linebacker).

Those absences (and the Saints additions) could significantly impact the game's outcome. Of course, New Orleans played a less-than-100-percent Packers team last Sunday but didn't take advantage.

With Carr in line to start, the Saints must make the most of their good fortune.
