Saints' Michael Thomas receives random drug test after deadlifting over 500 pounds

The NFL's official Twitter account posted a video of Michael Thomas deadlifting 530 pounds on Monday. Now, the New Orleans Saints wide receiver has been selected by the league for a random performance enhancing substance (PES) test.

The NFL's drug tests -- whether random or not -- are nothing new. A host of star players have taken to social media after being selected for a test, claiming that their selection wasn't random, as it only came after big-time performances in games.

After a six-catch, 156-yard, three-touchdown day last season, Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown was chosen for a drug test. He went on Twitter to complain about the situation, hinting that it was no coincidence that the test came right after his huge effort in the team's Week 8 win against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

New England Patriots Pro Bowl defensive end Matthew Judon had multiple random drug test requests last season. After one in mid-December, Judon tweeted that he wanted to be left "the F alone."

Recently retired legend J.J. Watt lamented being chosen for a random test in December after one of his best games of the 2022 season. The request came following an effort where he recorded season highs in tackles for loss (three) and sacks (3.0) while recording his only forced fumble of the campaign as well.

Since making three consecutive Pro Bowls from 2017-19, including a pair of First Team All-Pro honors and the AP Offensive Player of the Year award in 2019, Thomas has been severely hampered by injuries. He played in only seven games during the 2020 campaign and missed the entire 2021 season before suiting up for only three games last year.
