Saints QB Jameis Winston donates $50K to Hurricane Ida relief in New Orleans

New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston is donating $50,000 to the United Way of Southeast Louisiana to help people in the New Orleans area impacted by Hurricane Ida, according to NFL Media's Steve Wyche.

"Hurricane Ida has caused widespread devastation in our community and has impacted the lives of so many people across the state of Louisiana," Winston said in a statement. "My teammates and I are committed to helping our community bounce back and persevere day by day during this difficult time."

Winston has been very involved in the New Orleans community since being named the Saints' starting quarterback. He partnered to donate more than 65,000 units of water to the Boys and Girls Club, the New Orleans Police and first responders, and he launched a Nola Strong T-shirt campaign, donating all proceeds to World Central Kitchen, which provides meals to those in need in Southeast Louisiana.

In addition to his off-field duties, Winston has been impressive on the football field, leading the Saints to a 2-1 record. In last week's 28-13 win over the New England Patriots, the veteran threw for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

The 27-year-old has completed 60.3% of his passes this season for 387 yards and seven touchdowns against two interceptions. If he continues to play well, the Saints could be headed for their fifth straight playoff appearance.

Saints defensive end Cam Jordan also stepped up following Hurricane Ida, donating $40,000 earlier this month to the Second Harvest Food Bank. In addition, Saints owner Gayle Benson donated $1 million toward Hurricane Ida relief efforts.
