Saints QB Jameis Winston expected to be ready for training camp

The New Orleans Saints re-signed quarterback Jameis Winston to a two-year, $28 million contract on Monday. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday morning that the one-time Pro Bowl signal-caller is progressing well in his rehab from last season's torn ACL and should be good to go for the start of training camp this summer.

The first overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, Winston spent the first five seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and earned his lone Pro Bowl honor as a rookie. During his final year with Tampa Bay in 2019, Winston led the NFL in passing yards (5,109), passing yards per game (319.3) and pass attempts (626), but also led the league in interceptions with 30.

Winston joined the Saints to serve as Drew Brees' backup ahead of the 2020 campaign. Last year he started the first seven contests of the season for New Orleans, completing 59% of his passes for 1,170 yards with 14 touchdowns and three interceptions.

The NFC South has seen a shuffle in starting quarterbacks this offseason, with the Buccaneers seeing Tom Brady retire and then un-retire and the Atlanta Falcons trading Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts and then signing Marcus Mariota. The Carolina Panthers would seem to have serious question marks under center as well, as last year's trio of Sam Darnold, Cam Newton and P.J. Walker all struggled to put much faith in fans that they could hold down the starting gig in 2022.
