Saints Release Veteran RB Jamaal Williams On Tuesday

The New Orleans Saints have released Jamaal Williams.

The official move was on Tuesday's NFL Transaction Report. It comes with little surprise, as New Orleans simply didn't get what they needed there when he was originally signed.

Moving on from Williams will save the Saints $1.59 million while also costing them $2.34 million in dead money. He was scheduled to count for $3.93 million against the cap in 2025.

Following a career-high 17 rushing touchdowns in 2022, Williams joined the Saints in free agency and spent two seasons in New Orleans. He'd appear in 27 games for the black and gold, but didn't come close to a fraction of his production while with the Detroit Lions. He went from 324 snaps (37%) in 2023 to just 178 (20%) in 2024.

There was obviously the controversial ending in the regular season finale against the Atlanta Falcons in the 2023 season that led to a lot of drama. At the time, then head coach Dennis Allen apologized for the rushing touchdown ran out of victory formation, saying that wasn't who the Saints were. The players got behind Williams and wanted to get him in the end zone. That incident ended up fracturing the locker room and relationship, as we learned later.

For the Saints running back room, they have fullback Adam Prentice set to hit free agency and now have a group of Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller, Jordan Mims and Xazavian Valladay (reserve/future) for Joel Thomas to coach. That could see additions through the draft.
