Saints Sign New Quarterback After Derek Carr Retirement

The New Orleans Saints will have a very inexperienced quarterback room heading into the 2025 season.

Just a few days ago, Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr announced his retirement from the NFL. This decision was made roughly two months after the Saints restructured his contract. So what led to him walking away from the team and $30 million? He reportedly experienced shoulder pain during his offseason training.

After undergoing medical evaluations, Carr learned that he has a labral tear and degenerative rotator cuff damage in his throwing shoulder. Even if he had surgery, it would've knocked him out for the 2025 season.

"Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League," Carr said. "For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. "It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us."

With Carr no longer in the picture, the Saints are most likely going to start either Spencer Rattler or Tyler Shough at quarterback. They're not the only options on the roster though.

On Tuesday, the Saints signed former Iowa State and Iowa Western quarterback Hunter Dekkers to a contract. During his time with the Cyclones, he completed 65.4 percent of his passes for 3,355 yards with 22 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Dekkers missed the 2023 college football season for Iowa State due to a gambling scandal. He later admit to placing a bet on an Iowa State game when he was a redshirt freshman.

If Dekkers performs well in camp, maybe he'll earn a spot on the practice squad. As of right now, he's expected to be a training camp body for the Saints.
