The New Orleans Saints are work in progress. After reports that they will be open to trading veteran pieces in the coming weeks ahead of the NFL's trade deadline, the black and gold went out and had their most complete performance of the season in Kellen Moore's first campaign.
With the victory, Spencer Rattler got to grab some confidence, while Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart felt the hardships of the NFL against a team who didn't pick him during the 2025 NFL Draft.
The young starter officially has his first NFL win. Joining Kellen Moore, both pieces to the Saints franchise garnered their first victory, and both deserved it. Rattler was decisive and efficient for the most part against a dynamic New York defensive line.
Rattler wasn't phased by pressure at times and found ways to push the ball downfield when it matters most. Most importantly, Rattler took care of the football. He did not turn it over. Meanwhile, rookie QB Jaxson Dart had three turnovers for the Giants.
The secondary for New Orleans in the first half was underwhelming. At halftime, they must have flipped a switch for Brandon Staley, though. They played sticky coverage and limited the depth pass catchers for New York on any deep ball opportunities. Anytime Dart wanted to take a chance - the Saints turned it into a mistake.
The rookie QB was playing with a bit more pressure on himself against the Saints, too. New Orleans passing on him in round one of this year's draft placed a chip on his shoulder, understandably.
“I think that there’s always a chip on your shoulder any time that something like that happens,” Jaxson told reporters, “I’m just gonna go out there and play as hard as I can.”
"Giants fans are so far grateful that the Saints didn’t draft Dart ninth overall. According to Dart, it sounds like he believed there was a legitimate shot he’d be suiting up for the Saints this season." -- Joe DeLeone, A to Z Sports
For New Orleans, keeping Rattler as their starter this season worked out for them in Week 5. They were able to earn their first win and take advantage of turnovers by the Giants consistently. We'll see if Dart bounces back going forward for New York.
