The NFL has made strides in terms of player inclusivity over the recent years. It has been four years since Carl Nassib became the first active player in league history to come out as gay. Over the last two seasons, the NFL has embraced an increase in its female viewership, largely due to the Taylor Swift effect.
Now, another NFL player is set to create history by holding the first LGBTQ+ football camp in history! Two-time Super Bowl champion Khalen Saunders is set to organize the LGBTQ+ football camp for children along with his brother, Kameron Saunders. The Saunders brothers are a fine example of siblings who grew up loving opposite things, but thrived in their respective fields.
Kameron has grown popular as a top dancer for Taylor Swift. He traveled with the star on her recent Eras Tour. The Saunders brothers have teamed up to encourage LGBTQ+ youth to play sports. The effort comes after The Trevor Project, released a report that found LGBTQ+ youth prefer to abstain from sports due to fear of discrimination.
The first-ever LGBTQ+ camp is scheduled to take place on the 5th of July in St. Louis, Missouri. Khalen has hosted a youth football camp for the youth of St.Louis in the past, but this time, he is hoping to accomplish something bigger:
I hope this camp can accomplish teaching the younger generation how to be accepting and loving and empathetic of others. Because at the end of the day, loving one another is the most important thing. I feel like my No.1 rule that I’ve always went by it, treat others as you want to be treated.
It is inspiring to see the defensive tackle make an effort to make football more inclusive. It is due to players like him that talented players reluctant to pursue sports due to their sexual orientation feel encouraged to give it a shot.
Having grown up with a homosexual brother, Khalen was able to understand the difficulties his brother had to endure. Kameron came out to his family at the age of eleven. His family deserves to be credited because they embraced him and supported him. The defensive tackle has taken on a protector role since childhood. Even though he is the younger one, Khalen felt the desire to step up and protect his brother.
Kameron has expressed his gratitude towards his family for their overwhelming support.
I didn’t have the story that so many people in the queer community have. And I think that’s important to talk about. To be 100% clear, my circumstances were very different and I’m very grateful for how that turned out. But that’s not the story for a lot of people.
There have been a total of 16 players in NFL history who have come out as gay or bisexual. However, apart from Nassib, the other players came out after their professional football careers ended. Despite the liberalized views, there are players in the league who continue to keep their sexual orientation private.
It is important that the younger players, the next generation, be encouraged to live up to their potential and actively take up sports irrespective of their sexual orientation.
