The New Orleans Saints came out of nowhere to acquire a new target for Kellen Moore's offense on Wednesday evening. The price they paid was probably heavier than expected, a nod that they have a lot of confidence in their new pass catcher and less belief in the current depth of their WR room, most likely.
New Orleans traded a 2026 4th-round pick and a 2027 7th-round pick to the Denver Broncos in exchange for WR Devaughn Vele.

Vele immediately adds size and impressive hands to the wide receiver room in New Orleans. He was incredibly efficient last season for Sean Payton's offense.
Per @Stathead, 89 different wide receivers were thrown to 50+ times last year. 85 of them had a lower receiving success rate than Devaughn Vele (63.6 on 55 targets).

For New Orleans, Vele immediately steps in as the largest WR target in the offense. The Saints have been monitoring the free agent market for a big-bodied wideout. Now, instead, they go with the trade route and move legitimate draft capital in order to land Vele's services.
Following the trade, depth players currently on the roster may certainly feel the heat at pass catcher. entering this week, I thought Cedrick Wilson Jr. was a strong candidate to make the team due to his size, experience, and special teams ability. Now, there's a new, younger option with a similar body type and more upside for the offense on the depth chart.
As far as the #Saints 53, I think the only guy who might be significantly impacted by the Vele addition is Cedrick Wilson. I had him making it based on the Kellen Moore connections and the fact that he was the only guy with size that I could trust as a blocker. Not true anymore. -- Jeff Nowak
I'm not sure this move by New Orleans affects Mason Tipton too much, though. He's a speedster, smaller wideout who can play on special teams also. Not to mention, Kellen Moore gleamed about Tipton following last week's preseason matchup for the Saints. I still expect him to make the active roster for Week 1.
Players like Kevin Austin Jr., Donovan Peoples-Jones, and Dante Pettis all have an even tougher hill to climb if they want to make the 53-man to begin the season. For those first two, the addition of Vele may have sealed their fate as practice squad hopefuls or potential free agents who will join new teams following next week's roster cut down.
