The New Orleans Saints remain active after cutting down their roster on Tuesday. Wednesday has been packed full of practice squad news from teams around the NFL.

The Saints just made their first waiver claim following the league-wide cutdown of rosters. They're adding a player with familiarity with their new coach.

Saints claim RB/KR Kene Nwangwu off waivers from Vikings

Nwangwu spent time with Klint Kubiak, the new Saints offensive coordinator, early in his pro career. In 2021 under Kubiak, Nwangwu rushed 13 times for 61 yards (4.7 YPA) with a long of 19 yards. He was also a piece on the return team for the Minnesota Vikings.

With the NFL rule shift on kickoffs, you need two capable, notable options back to return every time.

The Saints probably feel like their best option there is Rashid Shaheed, but past that, it gets cloudy. mason Tipton could play a role there, and second-rounder Kool-Aid McKinstry also has return experience. regardless, it's clear that they felt a depth move could make a lot of sense for their potential on returns.

Keep in mind that Shaheed is also working his way back from injury. New Orleans may want to avoid having him return kicks to begin the season to keep him as healthy as possible for their offense.

We will see how much of a role Nwangwu can carve out for the Saints in 2024.

With the move, a current 53-man player will have to be waived/released or could go to IR. updates to come.
