Sam Darnold continues to break records, this time doing something no other quarterback has ever accomplished

What else can you say about Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold

It's been a beyond remarkable season for Darnold for many reasons. Nobody expected the Vikings to do much of anything this season. They were projected to win just 6.5 games this year and the blew that out of the water. The 2024 Vikings are on the level of the 1999 Rams who outplayed their win total by a ton as well.

Outside of the overall team success, the Vikings have been at their best when the quarterback has been firing on all cylinders. That was evident in their 27-25 win over the Green Bay Packers.

Sam Darnold continues to break records

The way Darnold has played is getting him in the record books. His 36 passing touchdowns this season is now the second most in Vikings history behind Daunte Culpepper's Most Valuable Player caliber season when he threw 39 touchdowns, including three games throwing five touchdowns in the first five weeks.

The records don't end there for Darnold. His passer rating numbers are insane. He is just the second quarterback to have 13 games with a passer rating over 100 in a season. The only one with more? Aaron Rodgers during his MVP season in 2020.

Passer rating isn't the best stat to quantify how good or bad a player played, but having a rating over 100 in 13 games is still a remarkable feat. Darnold has been very consistent this season, even with his rough stretch in the middle of the season.

Darnold has missed a passer rating of 100 on just three occasions:

  • Week 5 vs. Jets: 50.3
  • Week 10 at Jaguars: 48.2
  • Week 15 vs. Bears: 74.1

The Jets game was a bad weather game in London that had both quarterbacks playing poorly. The Jaguars game was irredeemably bad and the Bears game was a heavy game script on the ground.

This isn't even the most impressive record that Darnold earned. On Sunday, Darnold became the first quarterback ever to win 14 games with a team in the first year with a team and he joined Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner as the second quarterback ever to win five games and throw for 1,400+ yards and 14+ touchdowns in the month of December.

Darnold deserves to be in the Most Valuable Player conversation as his performance this year is worthy of consideration.
