Howell gets a fresh start early in his career.

One of the best quarterbacks in the history of North Carolina football has been traded. In just his second year in the NFL, Sam Howell had shown promise with the Washington Commanders. Some streaky play, partially due to factors out of his control, led to uncertainty.

Growing Pains

Before the start of the 2023 season, the Commanders named Howell the starter. He had proven his ability in the preseason and training camp. After getting off to a hot start early in the year, things fell apart. Howell played behind an awful offensive line that let him get sacked constantly. He was running for his life in most games, which in turn produced a number of turnovers.

Being benched mid-game and losing his starting job couldn’t have been good for morale.

Trade Details

Seahawks Receive: Sam Howell, a fourth-round pick, and a sixth-round pick.

Commanders Receive: A third-round pick and a fifth-round pick.

Season Stats

Howell finished the season with 3,946 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions. Unfortunately, he was sacked 65 times in his 17 games played.

Although personnel will change, the Seahawks only gave up 38 sacks this year compared to the Commanders 65. Seattle also has young talent that they can build around.

A change of scenery could be good for Howell’s development.
