The Detroit Lions returned to the practice field Thursday to continue preparations for their showdown against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game.

Among those not present during the portion of practice open to media were center Frank Ragnow, offensive guard Jonah Jackson, defensive back Chase Lucas and wide receiver Kalif Raymond.

Tight end Sam LaPorta returned after being listed as a non-participant in Wednesday's walkthrough, while linebacker Alex Anzalone was in action after being listed as limited.

The Lions have been fortunate to reap the benefits of strong drafts under general manager Brad Holmes. Many of their Draft picks over the last three seasons have become key contributors.

Additionally, the team has strong position coaches. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn praised both the personnel department for their scouting as well as the coaches for their teaching abilities while explaining the team's success.

"You start with our personnel department and Brad Holmes and what they do. They're trying to find players that fit exactly what we do. So you can give those guys a lot of credit," Glenn said. "And then give the players credit too because they develop. Here's one thing that we talk about a lot, we need coaches that can teach and develop because it makes your organization sustainable.

"Our guys try to do that the best they can and our coaches make sure that that's who we want as far as coaches, teachers and developers," Glenn explained further. "These guys have done a really good job of improving every year, that's why the defensive numbers have improved every year. It will never happen overnight, we still have some improvement to do, but for the most part, man, we're happy with those guys."
