The Pat Tillman Foundation was named after legendary safety Pat Tillman, who spent three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before giving up his NFL career to enlist in the Army. Tillman served in Iraq and in Afghanistan, but was tragically killed by friendly fire.
Prior to his time in the NFL, Tillman was a member of the Arizona State Sun Devils, where he generated some serious buzz in Tempe. In 2007, Tillman was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year due to his incredible play.
“The Pat Tillman Foundation identifies remarkable military service members, veterans, and spouses, empowering them with academic scholarships, lifelong leadership development opportunities, and a diverse, global community of high-performing mentors and peers,” the website reads. “These scholars are making an impact as they lead through action in the fields of healthcare, business, public service, STEM, education, and the humanities.”
