Another week, another win for the San Francisco 49ers, who are now 2-0 following their 26-21 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Another week, however, has resulted in more injury problems for the shorthanded Niners, who are already missing the services of both Brock Purdy and George Kittle due to multi-week injuries.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters on Monday to provide key updates on the status of his injured players from Sunday’s costly win.
For starters, nine-time Pro Bowl fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who exited the Saints win in the first half due to a head injury, has officially been placed on the concussion protocol. The 34-year-old will now need to undergo the NFL’s five-step protocol before he is cleared to play.
Shanahan also announced that wide receiver Jauan Jennings is now dealing with an ankle issue and is considered day-to-day. Jennings suffered a shoulder injury in Week 1, but was able to play through the same against New Orleans. The 28-year-old wideout is now in danger of missing San Francisco’s next game due to a new injury.
Guard Ben Bartch also sustained an injury against the Saints. He was seen in a boot after the win, and the team has now confirmed that he’s set to miss “a while” with a high ankle sprain.
Defensive back Siran Neal has also been placed on the concussion protocol and will need to undergo the same process as Juszczyk if he hopes to play on Sunday in San Francisco’s Week 3 home matchup against the Arizona Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium.
Finally, backup left tackle Spencer Burford is also day-to-day with a knee problem.
It’s great that the Niners are out to a 2-0 start to the new season, but they cannot afford to keep losing players. These injuries will eventually catch up to them, and San Francisco could be facing a tough road ahead if their luck does not change in the immediate future.
