San Francisco 49ers’ Dre Greenlaw Breaks Silence on Super Bowl Injury ‘Shed a Couple Tears’
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw suffered one of the more heartbreaking injuries you’ll see.

Greenlaw ruptured his Achilles tendon while trying to run back onto the field, from the sideline, during the 49ers’ Super Bowl loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Ahead of a regular season, which he will miss a significant portion of as he continues to rehab the injury, Greenlaw opened up about what life has been like since his knee crumbled on the grandest stage in sports.

“Sometimes you get a little flashback and shed a couple of tears thinking about it,” Greenlaw told NBC Sports Bay Area last week, addressing the injury publicly for the first time.

Greenlaw revealed that he was still suffering pain in the knee for months after suffering the injury, and that it has taken a toll on him in recent months.

“It’s definitely an emotional thing because you know how hard you worked for that moment, how hard your team worked to get in that moment,” Greenlaw said. “You’re that close to it and you can’t go out there and compete. So it just kind of feels like you left everybody hanging.

“So it’s one of the things that you just kind of think about and you just try not to cry.”

San Francisco is viewed as a legitimate favorite to unseat the Kansas City Chiefs, avenge last year’s loss and win the Super Bowl this upcoming season.

Once healthy, Greenlaw figures to play a starring role on one of the most menacing defenses in the sport, after posting 120 tackles with 1.5 sacks last season.
