Injuries in the NFL can happen on any given play at any given moment. They can even happen in far more unusual times than that, as San Francisco 49ers LB Dre Greenlaw found out in Super Bowl LVIII.
The Niners' standout defender went down on the field with a lower left leg injury - as announced by the team - in the second quarter while coming onto the field following a punt.

Greenlaw was bouncing up and down at the edge of the field, waiting to come onto the field after the conclusion of the punt return by Kansas City. As the whistle blew, Greenlaw shot forward to go onto the field, but he went down immediately and did not get up quickly, needing assistance from the medical staff.
After going into the blue tent, Greenlaw was carted back to the locker room, as the team listed his return as questionable. A short while later, the CBS broadcast announced the injury was to his Achilles, although the nature or severity of the injury wasn't disclosed. His status was updated by the team to out shortly before halftime.
Greenlaw saved his most impactful performance of the season in the 49ers' 24-21 divisional round win over the Green Bay Packers, pulling down two second half interceptions of Jordan Love in the Niners' come from behind win, including one in the final minute to seal the win.
Now, Niners fans will see soon if Greenlaw's teammates can rally around his injury and help deliver him a Super Bowl ring.
