San Francisco 49ers held interview with 2024 NFL Draft prospect who compares himself to Christian McCaffrey
Vasha Hunt-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers' reported list of top-30 visits did not feature a running back, but they did hold an interview with an extremely intriguing prospect at the position.

Per Kevin Maher of News12LI, the 49ers interviewed with New Hampshire running back Dylan Laube.

Laube enjoyed a superb career at New Hampshire, racking up 2,773 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns across his two seasons as a starter. In the receiving game, Laube added 171 catches for 1,791 yards and 14 touchdowns.

That kind of production, even at the FCS level, will get the attention of NFL teams that are all looking to find backs who can offer dual-threat upside akin to that of 49ers superstar Christian McCaffrey.

Offensive Player of the Year McCaffrey last season finished with 2,023 yards from scrimmage, including 564 yards in the receiving game. He had seven receiving touchdowns as part of a league-leading 21.

Laube's impressive pre-draft process included a strong showing at the Senior Bowl, where he did not hesitate in likening himself to McCaffrey when asked for a player comparison.

Speaking to A to Z Sports' Destin Adams, Laube revealed that he met several members of the McCaffrey family at the Senior Bowl, where Christian's brother Luke was also participating, and informed them of the comparison he made.

Said Laube:

"So the last day of the Senior Bowl as we were getting ready to leave, I was getting breakfast, and I saw Luke and his two parents there. I introduced myself to them, and they actually brought it up, saying that they saw in some interviews on social media that I had compared myself to their son Christian and acknowledged that I gave him a bunch of praise for how special of a player he is. They were super excited about that, and they were super happy about it, so I'm pretty sure the whole family knows now, so who knows, maybe Christian has a thought about it. If I ever run into him, I'll have to ask him."

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is always looking to add to the running back position and, with McCaffrey's main backup Elijah Mitchell a free agent next offseason, there's reason to believe they'll invest in the backfield again in this draft.

So, having interviewed with the 49ers during the pre-draft process, Laube can afford to have at least some hope that, not only will he get to meet McCaffrey and ask him about the comparison, but he'll also get to learn from the top running back in the NFL as a teammate.
