San Francisco 49ers: How Brock Purdy Nearly Doubled His Salary in 2023
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

It’s no secret that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is one of the biggest bargains in the NFL.

The former “Mr. Irrelevant” as the final selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy led the 49ers to a berth in the Super Bowl while his salary was a meager $870,000.

However, Purdy wound up earning significantly more last season, more than a year before the 49ers are even allowed to sign Purdy to a new deal and give him a significant raise.

Brock Purdy’s Massive Performance Based Pay

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Brock Purdy added $739,795 last season in performance-based pay, which is nearly double his salary from the San Francisco 49ers.

Purdy played his way into the MVP conversation thanks to the most stellar season of his career, and the 49ers into a berth in Super Bowl LVIII, by passing for 4,280 yards with 31 touchdowns to just 11 games.

Against Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, and former NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, Purdy passed for 255 yards and a touchdown in the Super Bowl, a 25-22 an overtime loss.

Still, Purdy answered any lingering doubt that he’s capable of playing like one of the top quarterbacks in the league and the 49ers’ franchise quarterback.

When San Francisco 49ers Can Sign Brock Purdy to a New Contract

Through the first two seasons of his career, Purdy has wildly surpassed the expectations of where he was drafted, and outplayed his rookie deal.

However, the San Francisco 49ers cannot rework Purdy’s contract or pay him anywhere near market value until January, 2025 at the earliest, due to the language of the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement.

Brock Purdy is set to make just $1.004 million for the 2024 season, and certainly has the chance to play his way into a deal that pays him among the top quarterbacks in the league following the upcoming campaign.

The 49ers are going to need to make some difficult decisions in the coming months to prepare for a new Purdy contract, though, as San Francisco is currently projected to be upwards of $30 million over the cap in 2025.

Any time that a quarterback is signed to a rookie contract, his team has a legitimate window to win a Super Bowl. The 49ers are rightfully considered a Super Bowl favorite in 2024, thanks in no small part to Purdy’s continued ascension up the quarterback ranks.

But, keeping an elite roster intact could prove significantly more difficult beginning in 2025, adding even more pressure on Purdy’s shoulders in 2024.
