The San Francisco 49ers' miserable 2024 season is mercifully over.

Attention for the Niners will quickly turn to their offseason plans and, while there will be a lot of focus on the draft and potential outside free agent signings, San Francisco will also want to retain some of its own.

Key players becoming free agents

CB Charvarius Ward - A second-team All-Pro last season, Ward was a true lockdown cornerback for the 49ers in 2023, but that was not the case in 2024. Ward dealt with personal tragedy in his third season with the 49ers as he mourned the tragic passing of his one-year-old daughter, Amani Joy, so his mind was understandably a long way from football for much of the year.

Ward, who recently celebrated the arrival of a newborn son, is well liked in the 49er locker room, and San Francisco would undoubtedly have faith in him to bounce back in 2025. However, with Deommodore Lenoir extended during the season and Renardo Green emerging as a hugely exciting player at the position, the 49ers may begrudgingly decide its better to part with a player who has proven an excellent free agent signing.

LB Dre Greenlaw - Greenlaw might have only played just over two quarters this season, but those two quarters against the Los Angeles Rams showed why the 49ers believe he is so important to their success on defense. San Francisco will undoubtedly try to bring him back, but his recent injury history and his failure to play one full game coming off his long recovery from his Super Bowl Achilles injury will play into the equation as they aim to keep Greenlaw around.

S Talanoa Hufanga - Similar to Greenlaw, Hufanga demonstrated how much his physical presence is worth to the 49ers when he finally got on the field in the second half of an injury-hindered season. An apparent drop-off in play from Ji'Ayir Brown down the stretch, which led to his benching, may have strengthened Hufanga's hand. The 49ers will need to weigh the injury history, but having three safeties under long-term contracts would remove it as a possible need heading into the draft.
