The San Francisco 49ers were expected to be a Super Bowl contender at the start of the 2024 NFL season. Due to injuries and other problems, they not only weren't a Super Bowl contender but also didn't even make the playoffs.
When all was said and done, the 49ers finished the year with a 6-11 record.
Throughout the course of the offseason, San Francisco lost quite a few key pieces and moved on from others.
Deebo Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders, while other players including Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanaga, Aaron Banks, Charvarius Ward, Jaylon Moore, Elijah Mitchell, Javon Hargrave, Maliek Collins, and Leonard Floyd are all gone as well.
Following the offseason the 49ers had, there are major questions heading into the 2025 season. Can they get back on track and into the playoff hunt?
Now that the schedule has been officially released, predictions are starting to roll in for San Francisco.
Daniel Chavkin of Sporting News has offered a head-turning prediction for the 49ers. He thinks the team will produce a 12-5 season, which is undoubtedly good enough to get back into the playoffs and contend for a championship.
"While the 49ers had a disappointing season in 2024, an easier schedule and improved health this year should allow for a bounce back," Chavkin wrote. "Expect San Francisco to return to the playoffs and once again challenge for a spot at the top of the NFC given its much more favorable situation."
Brock Purdy will need to step up in a big way and get back to being a star-level quarterback to make that prediction come true. There are also questions about his future status with the franchise amid the offseason contract discussions that have not produced great results to this point.
Regardless of the talent that has left or Purdy's long-term status in San Francisco, the 49ers still have a lot of talent on their roster. A 12-5 record is a major prediction, but it's a possibility.
Everything will kick off for San Francisco on Sept. 7 when the 49ers hit the road for their season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.
