San Francisco 49ers Release Former Third-Round Pick; LSU Product Waived After Just Two Seasons – Week 14
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

On Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers made a shocking move, cutting bait with a high-end selection from the 2021 NFL draft. Per NFL insider Ari Melrov, the 49ers have waived former third-round draft pick Tyrion Davis-Price.

San Francisco opted to make Davis-Price a healthy scratch for most of the 2023 season despite using a third-round pick on the running back just two seasons prior. Instead, three different running backs have outpaced TDP this season.

Tyrion Davis-Price: Stint with San Francisco 49ers Ends Abruptly

Tyrion Davis-Price played with the LSU Tigers from 2019 to 2021. During his final season, he shined, posting 1,067 scrimmage yards on 4.8 yards per touch. He scored six rushing touchdowns. His best game came in mid-October against a ranked Florida Gators squad, rushing 36 times for 287 yards and three scores.

The San Francisco 49ers selected Davis-Price with the 93rd pick in the subsequent NFL draft. However, he suffered injuries to begin his NFL career, including missing three games in 2022 with a sprained ankle. Additionally, the 49ers traded for All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey last season. Price rushed just 34 times for 99 yards as a rookie. The running back quartet of McCaffrey, Jeff Wilson, Elijah Moore, and Jordan Mason out-touched Davis-Price in 2022.

The LSU product has become primarily regulated to a healthy scratch this season. Davis-Price has yet to seen the field outside a six-carry, 21-yard rushing game against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5.

San Francisco 49ers: Status of Running Back Room

The 49ers will continue to lean on star running back Christian McCaffrey. The two-time Pro-Bowler leads the NFL with 1,032 rushing yards and 17 scores. Meanwhile, Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason will be the primary backups. Mitchell has spent his entire three-year NFL career with San Francisco, rushing 296 times for 1,391 yards and seven scores during that span. Mason has rushed 23 times for 127 yards and two scores this season.
