San Francisco 49ers signing of tight end Logan Thomas gives them an unusual embarrassment of riches
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers' signing of Logan Thomas ensured they will have a backup to tight end George Kittle who can provide more of a receiving threat than they have previously enjoyed from their reserves at the position.

But his signing also gives them another player who can be a clear threat on trick plays.

San Francisco of course took a 10-0 lead in Super Bowl 58 on the back of wide receiver Jauan Jennings' touchdown throw to Christian McCaffrey on a double pass.

McCaffrey threw a touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk on his first start for the 49ers in 2022 against the Los Angeles Rams. At the same stadium at the end of the 2021 season, Deebo Samuel threw a touchdown to Jauan Jennings on a trick play.

A college quarterback at Virginia Tech, Thomas threw a touchdown pass in his first season in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals in 2014, though that came while still being used as a quarterback rather than a tight end.

With Thomas joining the 49ers' stacked group of skill players, the Niners now have four who have thrown a touchdown pass in the NFL regular season or postseason.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has rarely been afraid to use the trick play string in his bow, with Emmanuel Sanders throwing a touchdown pass against the New Orleans Saints in 2019, and Thomas gives him another option with which to use it.

Despite the 49ers' loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58, Jennings' touchdown throw will be remembered forever, and the Niners will likely dip into the bag of tricks again at some point in 2024 with so many players to use in that capacity as they aim to get back to the biggest stage and finish the job.
