Saquon Barkley gave the Philadelphia Eagles another reason to watch Thursday’s training camp practice closely.
The star running back impressed during drills against Philadelphia’s defense. Later, however, Barkley appeared to tweak his left foot or ankle.
According to NBC Sports, Barkley’s cleat came off while trainers examined his foot. He remained on the field instead of heading into the medical tent.
The Eagles have not announced a diagnosis or indicated that Barkley suffered a significant injury.
For now, that leaves the situation in wait-and-see territory. Still, Philadelphia has little reason to take chances with its most important offensive weapon.
Barkley enters his third season with the Eagles after producing a historic first campaign in Philadelphia. He rushed for 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns while adding 278 receiving yards and two scores in 2024.
The Eagles also expect their offense to bounce back after a disappointing 2025 season. That makes Barkley’s health particularly important heading into the regular season.
Barkley does have experienced options behind him if the Eagles need additional carries.
Philadelphia’s current running back group includes Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley, Dameon Pierce, Carson Steele and Ja’Quinden Jackson.
The Eagles specifically entered camp with questions about who would emerge behind Barkley.
The team highlighted that competition in its 2026 running back position preview, which identified several players competing for roles behind the veteran.
Bigsby joined the Eagles in September 2025 after Philadelphia acquired him from Jacksonville before Week 2. He finished the season with 344 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Still, none of them offer the same established production as Barkley.
Philadelphia knows that distinction better than most teams.
Barkley has become a centerpiece of the Eagles’ offense since signing with the team in 2024. His explosiveness has also made him one of the league’s most dangerous backs.
That makes even a minor foot or ankle issue worth monitoring.
Philadelphia will open its preseason schedule Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens.
As such, they have little reason to push Barkley through an uncertain injury during Thursday’s practice.
The team has already dealt with several injury developments during camp. Thursday’s session added more attention to the running back position.
Philadelphia’s official site has continued providing daily camp updates as the team prepares for Baltimore.
The Eagles’ broader offensive plan also places significant responsibility on Barkley. The team is adjusting to a new system under offensive coordinator Sean Mannion.
ESPN’s 2026 Eagles camp preview identified Barkley’s role as one of the team’s key offensive storylines. The new scheme could create different opportunities for the veteran runner.
That makes his availability important beyond Saturday’s preseason game.
For now, though, Barkley’s situation remains unclear.
