Saquon Barkley’s Words Could Mean Big Opportunity for Will Shipley

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley stirred headlines this week after hinting that his NFL career could end unexpectedly. In an appearance on the Green Light with Chris Long podcast, Barkley compared himself to NFL legend Barry Sanders, saying he could see himself “just waking up one day” and deciding he’s done — whether that’s “next year, two years, or four.”

While Barkley emphasized that he still has a competitive fire and isn’t currently planning to walk away, the uncertainty of his timeline brings up an interesting question in Philadelphia: What happens if he does step away sooner rather than later?

Enter Will Shipley.

The Eagles spent a Day 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on the former Clemson standout, whose college résumé included over 4,200 all-purpose yards, 33 touchdowns, and a reputation for elite versatility. He was the only player in ACC history to earn first-team honors as a running back, all-purpose player, and specialist in a single season.

Though Shipley’s rookie year in Philadelphia was relatively quiet — 30 carries for 82 yards in 16 games — that shouldn’t diminish his long-term potential. He was drafted into a crowded backfield behind Barkley and Kenny Gainwell, but Barkley’s comments suggest that opportunity could come knocking sooner than anyone expected.

Shipley’s game mirrors much of what Barkley brought to the table in his early years — explosive cuts, pass-catching ability, and special teams value. What he lacks in top-end power he makes up for with IQ, vision, and durability.

He also entered the league with a strong reputation for leadership and off-the-field character, graduating from Clemson in just three years with a perfect 4.0 GPA while earning national academic and community honors.

If Barkley were to retire early, and if the Eagles choose not to spend big on another high-profile veteran, Shipley could be in prime position to rise into a feature role. He’d still have to compete, but the opportunity might not be as far off as originally assumed.

For now, Barkley remains the clear RB1 in Philadelphia. But if his own words are any indication, that could change “out of nowhere.” And if it does, the Eagles might already have their next man up in the form of a former Clemson Tiger.
