There was an air of invincibility around the Kansas City Chiefs when they won three Super Bowls in the span of five seasons. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was heaving the ball down the field on what felt like every play, and the team’s defense ratcheted up in the playoffs and made it seem unbeatable.
But then Kansas City played the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl two seasons ago, and they gave the rest of the NFL the blueprint on how to beat the Chiefs. They did it by getting a ton of pressure on Mahomes, with most of it coming on a four-man pass rush.
Now in 2026, Kansas City is returning to its dominant form, and it held a 5-0 record heading into its “Sunday Night Football” battle with the Seattle Seahawks. But as well as the Chiefs have been playing, the game played out almost exactly like the Super Bowl against Philadelphia.
Mahomes was running for his life all night, and at the end of the game, his team had only mustered three points. The defense didn’t get gashed by Seattle like it did against the Eagles, but it never felt like Kansas City had a chance in the 20-3 loss.
Mahomes completed less than 60% of his passes, threw for only 165 yards and had no touchdowns to one interception.
The two-time MVP has shown serious cracks in his armor throughout his career whenever he faces pressure, and it will be something more teams try to accomplish against him. Mahomes doesn’t have elite receiving options anymore, so if he can’t sit back and dissect the defense then there isn’t much he can do.
The Chiefs will likely bounce back from the deflating loss to the defending Super Bowl champions. They have games against the New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals in the near future, which are more than winnable games.
But they will need to figure out how to better protect Mahomes if they want to get back to making deep playoff runs.
