The stunning trade between the Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers involving wide receiver DK Metcalf is starting to make more sense for both sides.

The Steelers sent a 2025 second-rounder (52nd overall) and a sixth-round pick (185th overall) to the Seahawks, while Seattle sent back a seventh-round pick (223rd overall). The trade was finalized in early March, with the Steelers signing Metcalf to a five-year, $150 million contract extension.

On one hand, the six-time Super Bowl champions get a much-needed dominant player at a position of need, while extending him through the rest of his prime. On the other side, the Seahawks seemed hesitant to give a massive contract extension to the Ole Miss alum for a variety of reasons.

With Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s emergence last season, it wouldn’t make too much sense to dump a lot of money on another receiver if there are other holes on the roster.

The team was able to bring in Cooper Kupp (3-year, $45 million) and Sam Darnold (3-year, $100.5 million) this offseason, with both contracts equaling about the total amount of Metcalf’s new deal.

Seattle’s general manager John Schneider recently joined the 3 and Out Podcast with John Middlekauf on YouTube to discuss some of the details of the trade.

“In regards to DK, we had a ton of conversations last offseason about his legacy, where he wanted to go. Once he met the new coaching staff, he was excited. And then this year it just happened and again, you can’t change the way people think as much as we love him and wanna have him here,” Schneider said.

“When people wanna leave, it’s difficult to try to convince them to stay. Once we got back from the (NFL) Combine, we had another real open talk and then we told him we would concede to his wishes. No promises, but we’ll see where it goes,” Schneider added.

At the end of it all, the trade seems like it will be beneficial for both franchises. One team (Seattle) needed more flexibility, while the other (Pittsburgh) was extremely interested in the player.

“Pittsburgh, Omar, those guys were really aggressive,” Schneider said.
