Seahawks HC search: Way-too-early odds for Pete Carroll's replacement

If you thought the Tennessee Titans firing Mike Vrabel shook up the odds at sportsbooks for "who would be head coach where" next season, then were you in for a treat when Pete Carroll's exit from the Seattle Seahawks was announced.

Nobody was prepared for the news Wednesday that Carroll is out as HC in Seattle after a 14-year run that included 137 wins plus two Super Bowl appearances and a championship against the Denver Broncos in 2013.

However, that surprise didn't stop oddsmakers from getting right to calculating who could be taking his place. SportsLine was on the case early to determine the way-too-early odds for who could be filling Caroll's gum-chewing shoes up in the PNW.

While potential coaches are usually listed at some kind of odds, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn breaks even as the betting favorite. While Quinn is a favorite to land a head-coaching job with multiple teams, his connection to the Carroll and the Seahawks makes him the favorite here.

"Quinn was Seattle's assistant head coach and defensive line coach from 2009-10 and the defensive coordinator in 2013-14 — both Super Bowl seasons led by the "Legion of Boom" defense," SportsLine reminds us.

"If Carroll [has] a say in selecting his replacement, it would make sense that it would be someone who worked under him like Quinn or Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales. Canales was an assistant in Seattle from 2010-22."

Speaking of Canales, he is listed at +500 odds to be the next Seahawks head coach, while Vrabel is slightly ahead of him on the list at +400 odds. Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike MacDonald is listed at +700 odds, while Washington Commanders assistant head coach and OC Eric Bieniemy comes in at +1000.

For those of you on Jim Harbaugh watch, the Michigan Wolverines HC makes the list but is a long shot to get the job up in Seattle at +2500 odds. Washington Huskies HC Kalen DeBoer — whom Harbaugh recently defeated in the CFP National Championship Game — is a +5000 long shot for the job.
