Seahawks' Mike Macdonald Seemingly Confirms Trevon Diggs' Status

The Seattle Seahawks have some tough decisions to make over the next 24 hours.

The team is done with the preseason slate, so now they have to cut the roster down to just 53 players. Most of those spots are accounted for, but there are some options at the very bottom.

One of the players that will be interesting to watch is cornerback Trevon Diggs. Diggs was just recently brought in by the Seahawks, but he’s made an impression in that time. After Friday’s preseason finale, head coach Mike Macdonald seemingly confirmed that Diggs will be sticking around.

Macdonald Impressed With Diggs

In the preseason finale against the Chiefs, Diggs came away with the only interception of the game. It was an impressive read by the veteran and showed what he’s capable of.

After the game, Macdonald took time to praise the veteran.

“He’s really come up to speed (in the short time Diggs has been with the team),” Macdonald told the media after the game, “which is really saying something. I think our players have done a great job of coaching him up, and you hear them through walkthroughs, and our guys are coaching him up play-to-play. He knows ball…He did some great things today; obviously had the interception was pretty awesome. I’ve been really impressed since he got here.”

That sure makes it sound like Diggs’ spot is secured. That was far from guaranteed before the preseason finale, as the Seahawks have a few guys competing for just one or two spots.

We know Devon Witherspoon, Josh Jobe, and Nick Emmanwori are the starters, and Julian Neal has a backup spot. Diggs, Nehemiah Pritchett, and Noah Igbinoghene are competing for the final spot or two, and if Diggs is safe, that’s bad news for the other two players.

After that quote from Macdonald, the coach was asked if Diggs is a “viable” candidate to both be on the roster and be the CB3. Macdonald simply affirmed that Diggs is indeed viable.

Can Diggs Get Back to Elite Level?

A few seasons ago, Diggs was considered one of the best cornerbacks in the league. In 2021, the corner led the league with 11 interceptions and earned his first Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors.

Diggs had another Pro Bowl season in 2022, but injuries have impacted every season since then. Diggs was cut by the Cowboys last season, and the veteran was picked up by the Green Bay Packers. Diggs did not impress in his one opportunity with the Packers, and it looked like his career was going the wrong direction.

However, it seems likely that Diggs will get another chance this season. The Seahawks won’t need Diggs to be elite, but he does need to be better than he has been. If he can do that, the Seahawks’ secondary will be in very good shape.
