Seahawks Not Signing RB Joe Mixon
USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Connect

Joe Mixon’s lengthy free agency stay will continue, as it turns out. Mixon took a physical with the Seahawks, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes the team will not be signing the veteran running back. The sides had a practice squad agreement in place as of Monday.

Considering Mixon’s recent history, this is not too surprising. A foot injury kept him out of action throughout last season and required surgery. The extent of the damage to Mixon’s foot remains unknown, but after it appeared he had recovered sufficiently to resume his career, the Seahawks will pass on a deal.

The foot injury Mixon sustained during the 2025 offseason led him to Houston’s reserve/NFI list, where he resided throughout the season. The Texans cut him in March, and a July 2026 report pointed to the five-time 1,000-yard rusher’s career ending. His Seattle workout represented a path back into the league, and an agreement looked to be coming together quickly. Instead, it appears Mixon’s recent injury trouble will keep him off the Seahawks’ practice squad.

We heard following the Mixon Monday news a Seahawks decision to poach running back Robert Henry off the Commanders’ practice squad unfolded. Because Henry is being signed off another team’s P-squad, he must remain on Seattle’s 53-man roster for at least three weeks.

Henry played three seasons at Texas-San Antonio, finishing his college career with a 1,045-yard rushing season. The Washington rookie UDFA — whom the team cut and circled back to via a P-squad agreement August 31 — scored 30 touchdowns at UTSA.

Henry joins Emanuel Wilson, George Holani and return man Velus Jones as RBs on Seattle’s active roster. The team placed first-round rookie Jadarian Price on IR with a chest injury. Zach Charbonnet, however, is in the PUP-return window after coming back to practice for the first time since his divisional-round ACL tear. The contract-year RB stands to be an important piece of the Seahawks’ backfield — one that lost Kenneth Walker (the NFL’s current rushing leader) in free agency.

Rushing for 1,016 yards and scoring 12 total TDs during his healthy 2024 Texans season, Mixon made a key contribution to a team that has otherwise struggled to run the ball during Nick Caserio’s GM tenure. But Mixon entered the 2026 offseason with a tough combination, encountering a career-threatening injury and having logged the fourth-most carries (1,816) among active RBs.

This nixed deal, however, could move Mixon off the active-RB list and into retirement. At the very least, it appears Mixon would need more time to recover before continuing his career. At 30 and considering his history, this might be it for the former Bengals second-round pick.
