Seahawks' Sam Darnold Timeline Could Hinge on Schedule Quirk

Sam Darnold won’t play Sunday against Arizona, and the Seattle Seahawks have been careful not to put a date on his return. Mike Macdonald called the quad strain Darnold suffered on the final possession against the Bears a week-to-week injury, and said Darnold has a chance to play Nov. 15 in Las Vegas.

The calendar may make that call for him. The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero pointed out Saturday that Seattle’s bye comes right after the Raiders game. Holding Darnold out one more week would give him two extra weeks to heal before a Nov. 29 trip to San Francisco, the kind of game the Seahawks will want him fully healthy for.

Sam Darnold’s recovery math

Count it out on the calendar and the gap is real. Playing against the Raiders would put Darnold back on the field 13 days after the Nov. 2 injury. Waiting for the 49ers stretches that to 27 days, more than double the recovery time. The extra rest would also help the cracked rib Macdonald didn’t know about until after the game.

Macdonald hasn’t sounded worried about Darnold’s toughness. “This guy, he’s tough as nails,” Macdonald told reporters Wednesday, per TSN. “He’ll be back sooner than later, I’m sure.” Macdonald also said Darnold could likely play through the rib if not for the quad.

The 49ers game carries real weight. San Francisco sits at 6-1 and already beat Seattle 32-29 in Week 5, a game in which Darnold threw one touchdown pass and two interceptions. At 4-4, the Seahawks can’t afford to drop a second one to the NFC West leader. Darnold has 10 touchdown passes against nine interceptions through seven games, and a less-than-healthy version of him wouldn’t help that.

That’s where Drew Lock comes in. If he handles Arizona and Las Vegas, Seattle gets to play it safe without much cost. We’ve already looked at whether Lock can win the job, and at what Sunday means for Lock’s free agency future. If he struggles, the pressure to rush Darnold back for the Raiders goes up, and fans have already been asking where the reeling Seahawks go from here.

Seattle will reassess Darnold next week. Pelissero’s math points to the 49ers game as the real target.
