The Seattle Seahawks could have a roster spot open up following the injury to fourth-year wide receiver Jake Bobo.
Bobo injured his knee during the team's joint practice with the Tennessee Titans and is expected to be out for the foreseeable future, possibly the entire season. With Bobo out, the Seahawks could look into signing another wide receiver. Tyler Lockett might be the one that makes the most sense.
Bobo is a big loss for the Seahawks, but he isn't someone that produces much on the field. He only had two catches for 20 yards last season, so the Seahawks don't need a major player to fill in his role. Lockett is a player who is in the twilight of his career and wouldn't accept any role in the league, but a return to the place he called home for a decade could be enticing.
Lockett ranked second in Seahawks franchise history in receptions behind Steve Largent and is still viewed as one of the better players in franchise history. Lockett is also widely respected amongst the coaching staff and players on the team, so having him come on board would be a seamless fit.
When the Seahawks matched the offer sheet for Bobo in the offseason after he signed a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars, they did it because they wanted to keep a high-culture guy around. Bobo is one of the most popular players in the locker room, so not having him on the roster would be a tough pill to swallow. Replacing Bobo with a player like Lockett, who has a similar reach on players already on the team, would be a way to fill that void.
The Seahawks should exhaust all of their options in trying to replace Bobo with players already on the roster and other free agents. Getting creative with bringing Lockett back onto the scene might be the best possible scenario.
The best part about a possible Lockett deal is that he likely would only need a veteran minimum deal, which could save some room in the salary cap for other players down the line.
With Bobo gone, Lockett would join a wide receiver corps that already has Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp, Rashid Shaheed, Tory Horton and sixth-round rookie Emmanuel Henderson Jr., among others.
