Every year at the NFL Owners Meeting, Fox Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer hosts what has become one of the more quietly beloved traditions in the league. Head coaches gather, step away from the formal meetings, and spend time bonding over drinks, real conversations, and whatever is weighing on them entering the new season.

This was the 18th edition of that tradition, and this year’s gathering in Phoenix took on a slightly different feel. Mike Tomlin, the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach who helped Glazer launch the event 18 years ago, was no longer there as a coach. And when it came time for someone to settle the bill for the group, it was Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay who ended up covering it, as Glazer shared on X on March 31.

Glazer has cultivated some of the closest relationships in the league among coaches and players. According to his post, the purpose was always to get the head coach fraternity to bond, talk through challenges, and ask the kinds of questions they wouldn’t ask publicly.

This year, the group raised a glass to Tomlin, who retired after 19 seasons as Steelers head coach following the 2025 season. Per multiple reports, Glazer had known for roughly two years that Tomlin planned to step away.

Sean McVay’s Generosity at Phoenix Adds to His Reputation Among Peers

McVay, the 40-year-old Super Bowl-winning head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, is one of the most respected figures in the current coaching fraternity.

When he was hired by the Rams in 2017, he became the youngest head coach in the NFL’s modern era at the time of his hiring.

Picking up the tab for an event that brings together some of the most high-profile coaches in professional football is exactly the kind of move that speaks to his standing in that room.

McVay is currently in his 10th season as the Rams head coach and enters 2026 still among the NFL’s most highly compensated coaches, earning an estimated $15 million annually.

He arrived at the owners meeting in Phoenix with items of his own to address, most notably his position on the competition committee and his withdrawn rule proposals regarding two-point conversions.

Glazer and Tomlin have been close for years. Glazer revealed at Super Bowl LX that Tomlin had quietly told him about retirement plans nearly two years before stepping down, trusting Glazer with information that could have been among the biggest scoops in the game.

McVay stepping up with his card for this year’s bill adds a layer of good humor to a tradition that has now been running for nearly two decades.
